Comparison of Access Methods

This page provides an comparison of the different access methods so that you can choose which is right for your use-case.

Availability

All access methods are disabled by default. RCD will only enable access methods that the owner has explicitly requested to enable.

The owner can open a support ticket to request enabling or disabling access methods.

Accounts

The user must have an active Clemson account to access data on Indigo.

To access Indigo storage on the Palmetto Cluster, the user must also have a Palmetto account. Other access methods do not require a Palmetto account.

Data Transfer Speeds

All access methods support data transfer at Gigabit ethernet speeds.

Data transfer at Infiniband speeds is only available on the Palmetto Cluster.

Workstation Access

If users need to mount their storage to their workstation as a mapped network drive, they will need to use the SMB access method.

Network Restrictions

All access methods are accessible via the campus network.

Data stored on Indigo is generally not accessible from off-campus. When not on the campus network, users must connect via Clemson University VPN in order to access data stored on Indigo.

However, note that users can connect to the Palmetto Cluster from off-campus without VPN, so this does not affect Palmetto Cluster access to data stored on Indigo.
